RESEARCH 》 Grid Hosting vs CDN Hosting

These days web hosting firms are providing a new kind of service called Grid Hosting.

So, what is Grid Hosting? Grid hosting usually means that the web space you rent is not located on one (potentially shared) machine, but is more like a “virtual machine” which is hosted on a cluster of servers (which is a grid). So a service provided of this form is called Grid Hosting. Usually Grid Hosting may cost a little extra than the regular hosting service. Customers who already have regular hosting package can sometimes upgrade to grid hosting package(s), if your web hosting provider offers such services and a scheme for it.

While resources on a single machine are limited and might run out, especially if it’s a shared host and you have to share your resources (memory, bandwidth) with potentially hundreds or thousands of other users who are hosted on the same machine as you, grid hosting is more flexible, as your virtual website could leverage resources from more machines in the cluster if necessary. This of course also increases reliability of the website, as the failure of one grid node doesn’t matter, another server takes over, while the failure of your dedicated or shared host takes your website offline.

Web hosting firms refer single machine hosting commonly as website hosting.

Grid Hosting vs. CDN Services: Hence this is indeed similar to CDN Objectives and CDN like service. But the main difference is CDN vendors usually offer only CDN packages and application data acceleration services. In a way for SOHO and mid-level organizations may use Grid Hosting services, but still any large organization and or any website with huge amount of hits per second has to go for dedicated CDN Service. Sometimes it is also required for security purposes.

Also Grid Hosting will have limitations of number of nodes, unlike CDN. The advantage of CDN is all about how much shared/distributed and how big is its network. So for now when we assume CDN like service, it is far far much bigger and much wide spread network across Internet unlike Grid Hosting scenario. But as a cheap and temporary option, and also for very small websites if there is an option you can opt for Grid Hosting till the time you are not getting huge amount of load/hits to your website.

Soon after the launch when I monitored its Alexa rankings it was reporting about 12 Million or so. But once it is getting more and more traffic the Alexa rankings shot up and now currently it shows around 2 Million (as on 22-July-2016). Alexa is an excellent tool to monitor your overall website global ranking and indirectly its performance. Unlike Google Analytics which is bound one or other way into Google's SEO. Alexa gives you a second opinion about your website's growth.

VPN Networks may degrade network performance due to various packet processing overheads such as encryption and by adding extra network protocol header(s) (such as IPv4/IPv6, IPSec, etc). This may inflate near MTU sized packets and causes excessive packet fragmentation. Here are the few examples of packet processing involved in a VPN (or a VPN like) Tunnel. With TOFFEE you can optimize these packets even before they get processed on to a VPN device. TOFFEE optimizes packet contents (application payload and transport headers) so that these TOFFEE optimized packets when they get processed by VPN devices (or VPN software stack) they may never need further packet fragmentation. I started TOFFEE-Mocha WAN Emulation software development on 1-June-2016. I took the existing TOFFEE components as a base. Here is my power-consumption measurements of various devices deployed within my home lab. I measured via my kill-a-watt sort of power-meter which is fairly reliable and accurate. I checked its accuracy with various standard load such as Philips LED laps and other constant power-consuming devices to make sure that the power-meter is precise.

Assume you have two sites (such as Site-A and Site-B) connected via slow/critical WAN link as shown below. You can optimize this link by saving the bandwidth as well possibly improve the speed. However, the WAN speed can be optimized only if the WAN link speeds are below that of the processing latency of your TOFFEE installed hardware. Assume your WAN link is 12Mbps, and assume the maximum WAN optimization speed/capacity of Raspberry Pi is 20Mbps, then your link will get speed optimization too. And in another case, assume your WAN link is 50Mbps, then using the Raspberry Pi as WAN Optimization device will actually increase the latency (i.e slows the WAN link). But in all the cases the bandwidth savings should be the same irrespective of the WAN link speed. In other words, if you want to cut down the WAN link costs via this WAN Optimization set up, you can always get it since it reduces the overall bandwidth in almost all the cases (including encrypted and pre-compressed data).
