NEWS & UPDATES 》 Why TOFFEE is forked from TrafficSqueezer

TrafficSqueezer is an open-source WAN Optimization project. TrafficSqueezer is mainly a research project which is started around mid-2006. It is initially started as a research (or prototype) code even before it is officially registered in Sourceforge.net. But this code is just primitive user-space raw socket modules. This is later refined and a pre-alpha version is created. Followed by which Alpha release. This prototype code is moved from user-space to Linux Kernel (Kernel Space) and then the journey begin in terms of making a serious WAN Optimization solution. Once the pre-beta and beta releases are complete the mainstream series is started.

Here is the complete historical timeline of TrafficSqueezer(and the new TOFFEE) project:

TrafficSqueezer is mainly research centric and its purpose is to experiment WAN Optimization for Deep-space communications, Satellite networks and Mobile communications. Throughout many years its code and architecture underwent drastic changes so scale up and match these expectations/use-cases. The focus of TrafficSqueezer project is all about perfecting the WAN Optimization model and research than a very serious immediately usable WAN Optimization or Network Optimization software by every user in the world.

Introducing TOFFEE !
TOFFEE is a new fork of TrafficSqueezer project which is intended solely to cater Linux based Network Optimization platform and its related research (i.e: TOFFEE-Mocha, TrueBench, The Linux Channel, etc). Unlike TrafficSqueezer the primary objective of TOFFEE is not limited to research, but to bring in the change and make WAN Optimization suited for latest IT trends such as NFV, SDN, Virtualization, Software based WAN Optimization, IoT, and so on. Unlike TrafficSqueezer which is built in multiple stages and in multiple phases TOFFEE directly forked from the most latest mature version of TrafficSqueezer (mainstream). This way TOFFEE is not a project which is built from scratch. And so the new name TOFFEE hints new path, new direction, motivation, inspiration and a sense of simplicity.

Currently what we have is a single homogeneous (sort of) WWW Internet. Which we can consider as a single-dimensional network. What I propose is that we can create complete independent multiple Internets with each Internet having its own IP-address space, Domain namespace and an authority to manage Domain names. And these networks/Internets can be entirely IPv4 only based or IPv6 only based.

Raspberry Pi as a Networking Device ↗
Saturday' 13-Mar-2021
Raspberry Pi is often used as a single board computer for applications such as IoT, hobby projects, DIY, education aid, research and prototyping device. But apart from these applications Raspberry Pi can be used for real-world applications such as in making a full-fledged networking devices. Raspberry Pi is a single board ARM based hardware which is why it is also classified as ARM based SoC. Since it is ARM based it is highly efficient, tiny form-factor and lower in power consumption with moderate computational power. This will allow it to work several hours on emergency battery backup power supply such as low-cost domestic UPS and or some renewable energy source, which is a prerequisite for a typical networking device.

Saturday' 13-Mar-2021
Here is a complete log of my lab battery purchase, service record which I maintain in Google drive. These I use for my home (or my family generic use) as well as a part of my home lab. I maintain a detailed log this way to monitor the failure rate of these batteries. This will allow me to select a specific brand/model which has higher success rate and to monitor any premature failure/expiry. The service log helps me to monitor and schedule the next service routine so that I can maintain these batteries in tip-top condition.

TOFFEE-Mocha WAN Emulation software development - Update: 16-June-2016 ↗
Saturday' 13-Mar-2021
I started TOFFEE-Mocha WAN Emulation software development on 1-June-2016. I took the existing TOFFEE components as a base. Although the TOFFEE-Mocha is entirely an independent fresh Open-Source WAN Emulation solution. Ever since I am in the process of defining and inventing features. So far I come up with the most important feature which is expected to be present in any WAN Emulation software is the packet delay option.

Saturday' 13-Mar-2021
TOFFEE can be used to optimize expensive Wireless backhaul network infrastructure. TOFFEE can be deployed over existing slow or often outdated old backhaul networks too. This will leverage mobile ISPs and network service providers to reduce their bulk IT CapEx and OpEx Costs.

Now I supported and finished complete GUI support of these parameters so that you can configure, store, reboot and the same will restore upon reboot. Besides I complete the TOFFEE-Mocha Big-Picture page. The Big picture is an interface where you can find all the configuration (or settings) of the TOFFEE-Mocha. This is almost similar to CISCO device show all command but in graphical representation. Sometimes a network admin can also print the Big Picture page and paste it near to the device to refer its settings.
