NEWS & UPDATES 》 TOFFEE-Butterscotch Bandwidth saver software development - Update: 17-Nov-2016

Here is my second software development update of TOFFEE-Butterscotch. In the previous update (28-Oct-2016) I discussed about the Alerts, etc. You can read the complete article HERE. Whereas in my first TOFFEE-Butterscotch news update I have introduced about TOFFEE-Butterscotch research, project specifications, use-cases, etc.

Filter :: Block Torrent: You can now block selective torrent packets with the new block torrent feature under TOFFEE-Butterscotch Filter as shown below.
Block Torrent Traffic or packets

If torrent packets are blocked(dropped), the same is notified in the home page as alerts as shown below.

NOTE: The Alert count will be reset (and hidden) if block torrent feature is disabled.

Block Torrent Traffic or packets

Throttle Torrent: So far you can only Throttle TCP packets (includes all TCP application layer protocol packets). But from now you can also throttle other application protocol packets. For instance in this case Torrent packets. You can introduce directly inter-packet delay (upload and or download) and control the rate of these packets precisely. As long as you are using your home/SOHO internet all by yourself it is not that important to rate-limit Torrent traffic. But in case if you are sharing your connection with your family members or your employees(or colleagues) then this feature will slow down torrent traffic and on the other-hand prioritizes other important interactive traffic. If you are playing games or using your Internet for other purposes simultaneously while downloading large files via Torrent, then this feature will be quite useful so that the torrent traffic will not slowdown your basic Internet access.
Torrent download without bandwidth throttle

Here is my test HP laptop in which I am downloading a sample Ubuntu OS distro via torrent. In this case the Throttle torrent is disabled in TOFFEE-Butterscotch as you can see above. And this is the peak speed at which I can able to download this torrent.
Torrent download without bandwidth throttle

Test Case 1: Throttle Torrent Enabled :: Download and Upload delay 5msec:
Torrent download bandwidth throttle 5 milli seconds

In this case I am getting maximum download speed: 688KB/s (bytes/sec) as you can see below:
Torrent download bandwidth throttle 5 milli seconds

Test Case 2: Throttle Torrent Enabled :: Download and Upload delay 1msec:
Torrent download bandwidth throttle 1 milli second

In this case I am getting maximum download speed: 2.07MB/s (bytes/sec) as you can see below:
Torrent download bandwidth throttle 1 milli second

Here is my first software development update of TOFFEE-Butterscotch. In my first TOFFEE-Butterscotch news update I have introduced about TOFFEE-Butterscotch research, project specifications, use-cases, etc. Introducing TOFFEE-Butterscotch Alerts: These are simple packet counters which corresponds to the filter type. For example if the incoming TCP-SYN packets are blocked then its corresponding alert counter will increment whenever such a packet arrives and gets filtered (dropped).

TOFFEE-Mocha WAN Emulation software development - Update: 19-July-2016 ↗
Saturday' 13-Mar-2021
Today I refined the first page consolidated report graphs. TOFFEE-Mocha (unlike TOFFEE) is a WAN Emulator, so the graphs are supposed to highlight this purpose and should display the overall network activity. Unlike TOFFEE, the TOFFEE-Mocha report should contain in general what is received versus what is sent across the wire. In case if the packet drop feature is enabled, you should see few missing bytes and packets. Similarly in future I may support packet duplication feature, in that case you may see more packets/bytes sent versus the packets/bytes actually received.

Today I have done a test setup so that I can able to connect my Android Samsung Tab via TOFFEE DataCenter. Below is my complete test topology of my setup. For demo (and research/development) context I configured TOFFEE DataCenter in engineering debug mode. So I do not need two devices for this purpose.

Now I supported and finished complete GUI support of these parameters so that you can configure, store, reboot and the same will restore upon reboot. Besides I complete the TOFFEE-Mocha Big-Picture page. The Big picture is an interface where you can find all the configuration (or settings) of the TOFFEE-Mocha. This is almost similar to CISCO device show all command but in graphical representation. Sometimes a network admin can also print the Big Picture page and paste it near to the device to refer its settings.

Power consumption of my Home Lab devices for research ↗

Here is my power-consumption measurements of various devices deployed within my home lab. I measured via my kill-a-watt sort of power-meter which is fairly reliable and accurate. I checked its accuracy with various standard load such as Philips LED laps and other constant power-consuming devices to make sure that the power-meter is precise.

Introducing TOFFEE-Butterscotch - Save and Optimize your Internet/WAN bandwidth ↗
Saturday' 13-Mar-2021
TOFFEE-Butterscotch yet another variant of TOFFEE can be used to save and optimize your Home/SOHO Internet/WAN bandwidth. Unlike TOFFEE (and TOFFEE-DataCenter) TOFFEE-Butterscotch is a non peer-to-peer (and asymmetric) network optimization solution. This makes TOFFEE-Butterscotch an ideal tool for all Home and SOHO users.
